Tax Return Filing Due Dates

Individuals:

  • Calendar year filers (most common): Generally, the due date for filing your individual tax return is April 15th of the year following the tax year. However, if April 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is extended to the next business day.
  • Fiscal year filers: If you have a fiscal year tax year that ends on a date other than December 31st, your due date is the 15th day of the 4th month after your fiscal year ends. For example, if your fiscal year ends on June 30th, your due date would be October 15th.
  • Extensions: You can request a six-month extension to file your individual income taxes by filing Form 4868. This extension would give you until October 15th to file (or the next business day if that falls on a weekend or holiday).

Businesses:

  • C-corporations: The due date for filing a C-corporation tax return is generally March 15th of the year following the tax year. However, if March 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is extended to the next business day.
  • S corporations and partnerships: The due date for filing an S corporation or partnership tax return is generally April 15th of the year following the tax year. However, if April 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is extended to the next business day.

Additional factors to consider:

  • State deadlines: Some states have different deadlines for filing state income tax returns than the federal government. For example, the deadline for filing state income taxes in Georgia is also April 15th, 2024.
  • Penalties: If you file your tax return after the deadline without an extension, you will be subject to a late filing penalty.
